Habitat for Humanity builds simple and affordable houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. The one-story house is located on 36th Street in Newport News, Va., and is approximately 1,200 square feet with three bedrooms and two baths.
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding provided volunteers and financial support and coordinated the resources for this project.
“Mellakecha brought a great spirit, energy and enthusiasm into building this house,” said Rolf Bartschi, vice president of Waterfront Nuclear Engineering and Test and Chief Nuclear Engineer at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding. “We enjoyed helping build this house for her. May she and her family transform this house into a home.”
Representatives from the city of Newport News, Northrop Grumman, the United Steelworkers, Habitat for Humanity and homeowner Mellakecha Thompson participated in the ceremony.
“I am so excited I can’t even explain it,” said Thompson. “I’m just thankful that I’m able to own my own home and have my own place to give my kids to enjoy and grow up in for the rest of their years."
