LPD 17 (San Antonio Class) Program - Amphibious Transport Dock

Ships for Expeditionary Warfare

Anchorage (LPD 23)

NGSB is building the LPD 17 San Antonio Class, the newest addition to the U.S. Navy's 21st Century amphibious assault force.  The 684-foot-long, 105-foot-wide ships have a crew of 360 and are used to transport and land 700 to 800 Marines, their equipment, and supplies by embarked air cushion or conventional landing craft and assault vehicles, augmented by helicopters or other rotary wing aircraft.  The ships will support amphibious assault, special operations, or expeditionary warfare and humanitarian missions.

The program of record is nine ships, however, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps have identified a requirement for 11 ships to support USMC expeditionary strike group missions.  The multi-mission, versatile LPD ships will replace the functions of nearly 40 ships in at least four different classes.   The first four ships of the class have been delivered and five more are in various stages of construction:
